Difference between Accident, Near miss, Undesired circumstance and Dangerous Occurrence

Four most important and basis terms in field of HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) are Accident, Near miss, Undesired circumstance and Dangerous Occurrence. Let’s understand difference between these below:

Accident

An accident is an unwanted event that results in injury or ill health.

Near Miss

It is an unwanted event that has the potential to cause injury or ill health but didn’t caused so.

Undesired Circumstance

The term undesired circumstance refers to the set of conditions or circumstances that have the potential to cause injury or ill health, eg untrained doctors attending serious patients

Dangerous occurrence

The term dangerous occurrence refers to specific, reportable adverse events. Dangerous occurrence is generally a near misses that has high severity.
